What is Orthodontics?

Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry that specializes in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of tooth and jaw alignment irregularities in both children and adults. The technical term for these problems is "malocclusion" which means "bad bite". An orthodontic specialist (orthodontist) utilizes professional skill in the design, application and control of corrective appliances, such as braces, to bring the teeth and jaws into proper alignment and to achieve a great smile.

Timing of Orthodontic Treatment

Timing is very important and a crucial element for effectively treating children and teenagers since their growth can be utilized for better treatment results. Because monitoring growth and development is crucial to accurately managing some orthodontic problems well, the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that all children have an orthodontic screening no later than age seven. Some orthodontic problems are easier to correct if treated early. Waiting until all the permanent teeth have grown into the mouth may make the correction of some problems more difficult.

Causes of Orthodontic Problems

While most orthodontic problems are inherited, some are acquired during one's lifetime. Inherited problems include crowding of teeth, excessive space between the teeth, overbite, underbite, extra or missing teeth and a wide variety of other irregularities of the jaws, teeth and face.

Problems acquired throughout a lifetime can be caused by trauma (accidents), prolonged thumb, finger or pacifier habits, or premature loss of primary (baby) or permanent teeth. Whether your dental problems are inherited or acquired, many of these problems can affect facial development and appearance as well as alignment of the teeth.
