Length
of Time for Braces
In
general, active treatment time with braces ranges from 1 to 3 years.
The actual time depends on the growth of the patients mouth
and face, the cooperation of the patient and the severity of the
problem. This time period may be broken into two parts (phase I
and phase II) if early treatment is necessary to correct certain
jaw growth problems.
While orthodontic treatment requires a time commitment, patients
are rewarded with healthy teeth, proper jaw alignment and a beautiful
smile that lasts a lifetime. Teeth and jaws in proper alignment
look better, fit together better, contribute to general physical
health and can improve self-confidence.
The
Methods of Treatment
Braces
are prescribed and designed by the orthodontist according to the
problem being treated. By placing a constant, gentle force in the
right direction, braces move the teeth in a new and desirable position.
Orthopedic appliances are often used with braces to guide growth
and development of the jaws in children and teenagers. These appliance
may be removable or attached to the teeth. Some appliances can provide
expansion to widen the jaws and correct crowding. Other appliances
can dramatically reduce protrusion of the upper teeth and correct
the overbite.
Special
Care While Wearing Braces
The
patient must realize before treatment is started that braces require
special care. People with braces should be careful to avoid hard
and sticky foods. They should not chew on pens, pencils or fingernails
because chewing on hard things can damage the braces. Broken braces
will almost always cause treatment to take longer, and will require
extra trips to the orthodontists office.
Keeping
the teeth and braces clean requires careful brushing for approximately
three minutes at least two (preferably three) times a day. Food
debris and plaque will form accumulate much more easily when there
are braces on the teeth. Flossing daily is also an important part
of maintaining the health of the teeth and gums. Visits to the general
dentist should continue and may be needed more frequently.
The
Importance of Treatment
Crooked
and crowded teeth are difficult to clean and maintain. These problems
can cause cavities, gum problems, and tooth loss. Tooth and jaw
alignment problems can contribute to abnormal wear of the teeth
surfaces, insufficient ability to chew, and excessive stress on
gum tissue and the bone that supports the teeth. Jaw alignment problems
are also related to frequent headaches and pain of the jaw joint.
When left untreated, many orthodontic problems tend to become worse.
Treatment
by an orthodontic specialist is often less costly than the additional
dental care required to treat more serious problems that can develop
in later years. The value of an attractive smile should not be underestimated.
A pleasing appearance is a vital asset to ones self confidence.
A persons self esteem often improves as treatment brings the
teeth and face into balance. Orthodontic treatment can benefit social
and career success, as well as improve ones general attitude
toward life.
