Many
adults needed braces and did not have treatment when they were young.
Their parents could not afford braces, or their teeth could not
be straightened with previous orthodontic techniques. These adults
are now having problems with their teeth and gums due to the inability
to properly clean around the crooked teeth. Also, they may be experiencing
some jaw problems because the jaws do not fit together well. Most
commonly, these adults are unhappy with the appearance of their
smile.
Other
adults had orthodontic treatment a number of years ago, and have
noticed some shifting of the teeth. They are unhappy with these
changes and are re-treated to return the beautiful smile they had
previously.
There
are definitely health advantages to seeking adult orthodontic treatment.
When the teeth are crooked, they are harder to clean and will wear
unevenly. This may cause premature lose of teeth. Orthodontic treatment
can inhibit gum problems and prevent tooth loss. Chewing is the
first part of digestion. If the crooked teeth do not function properly
at chewing, the rest of the digestive system will have to work harder.
There
are no age limits for having braces
as long as the gum tissues and surrounding jaw bones are healthy.
But, treatment does differ a little for adults. The tooth straightening
occurs somewhat more slowly than with younger patients. Also, it
is more difficult to expand the jaws to correct crowding. When a
child is growing, the jaws can be changed to accommodate the teeth.
Once the growth process stops, these jaw changes are limited. Therefore,
adults are more likely to have teeth removed for treatment. Other
than these differences, treatment is very similar for adults and
children.
There
are no reasons that adults interested in straighter teeth should
not consider themselves for braces. A much higher percentage of
orthodontic patients are adults than in previous years. Adults seeking
orthodontic treatment are doing something positive for themselves
and will get healthy teeth and a great smile.
